A beautiful night at Randy’s, and the last time the freaking web site was up-to-date in 2025 (not like I haven’t been hearing about it since).
Round 1: Chivas Regal 12 Year Old
Cost: $81 CDN
Region: Scotland
Fun Facts:
Chivas Regal was the first luxury blended Scotch whisky ever introduced to the world!
NSC Comments:
Colour: Copper to Amber
Nose: Spicy, something there, don’t know what it is.
Palate: Spicy, Fruity, Smooth, some oil to it
Finish: Long to Medium
Drinkability: 4.0,5.0,6.4,5.5,4.5,6.4,
Notes: Tastes like they forgot to put something in it
Not likely to purchase, but I’d drink it.
A good dram but unremarkable
Pleasant enough
Not bad but nothing special
Round 2: Tamdhu 12 Year Old Sherry Cask
Cost: $114 CDN
Region: Speyside
Fun Facts:
Tamdhu Distillery was once considered one of the most technologically advanced distilleries in Scotland when it was founded in 1897. It had its own railway station for efficient logistics, redesigned kilns to reduce heat loss, and even implemented waste separation—pretty futuristic for the Victorian era!
NSC Comments:
Colour: Mahogany
Nose: Fruity, Sulphury, Citrus
Palate: Nutty, Dry, Smooth, Creamy
Finish: Long, Sharp Drop
Drinkability: 7.1,6.2,6.8,6.0,7.0,7.0
Notes: Has a body to it, more complex
Smooth, pleasant
Needs water
Very nice, typical Speyside
Bonus Round: Mortlach 12 Year Old
Cost: $104 CDN
Region: Speyside
Fun Facts:
Mortlach is famously known as “The Beast of Dufftown”—and for good reason. Unlike most Scotch distilleries that use a simple double distillation process, Mortlach uses a complex 2.81 distillation method. That’s not a typo—it’s a quirky, almost mythical technique involving six stills and a unique configuration that results in a rich, meaty spirit with intense character.
