2022-11 – Randy D.

It was a co-hosted event this time between Randy & Stan. Finally, Randy’s new build was ready enough to host the group, so the troop finally got a look at the new house that was only a hole in the ground in July of 2021. Stan and Randy put together an eclectic group of scotches for an equally eclectic group of nosers. And here they are:

Round 1: Tomatin Legacy

Cost: $53 CDNRegion: Highland

Fun Facts:

  • As a very large distillery, Tomatin produced a malt as a filler for countless blends during the boom year

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Honey to the majority
  • Nose: Fruity, a hint of pine
  • Palate: Citrus, some lemon, a tiny bit of fruit
  • Finish: Short finish for most
  • Water make a nice difference, adds some smoothness
  • Drinkability: 6.5,6.1,6,6.6,7.1

Round 2: Lisemore 18 Year Old

Cost: $103 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • Lismore is a non-distilling producer from Speyside which gathers its goods from an undisclosed location. The independent bottler in question, William Lundie & Co., is keeping mum on the source, and that’s quite all right. There are enough mysteries and turmoil in the world to fret upon without having to diligently sleuth for an answer to such a question.

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Copper to Honey
  • Nose: Nutty, Floral, Chocolate, some Spice & Peat
  • Palate: Chocolate, Fruit, Floral, Smooth
  • Finish: Universally Short, Smooth,
  • A good drop,
  • Drinkability: 6.9,7.5,7,7.1,7.2

Bonus Round: Peat’s Beast

Cost: $100 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • Peat’s Beast is a heavily peated single malt whisky, with phenol level of 35 ppm (parts per million). Coming from a mystery distillery from Speyside in Scotland. Matured in bourbon casks, bottled by an independent bottler, Fox Fitzgerald.

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Amber to Straw, surprisingly light colored
  • Nose: Peaty for all, touch of Sulphur
  • Palate: Powerful, Oily (very)
  • Finish: Short, Long, Long, Short, someone make up their minds!
  • All peat, all the time.
  • Water essential, and makes it truly enjoyable
  • Drinkability: 7.8,6.8,7.5,7.8,7.4
