Tasting Reviews

2021-11 – Ron C.

Yes… this session is from November 2021 and yes, was not published until March 2022. This is probably going to come up on my annual review. I plead the 5th, but here we go…

The start of SEASON 6 for the Nanoose Scotch Club and Ron has the hosting duty. We gathered in front of the living room fire, and had a great evening as usual. What a group!

Round 1: Port Askaig 100

Cost: $105 CDNRegion: Islay

Fun Facts:

  • One of the gateway Ports to Islay

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Between Straw and White Wine
  • Nose: Peaty primarily, Smoke, Spice, Fruit hint
  • Palate: Oily Peat, with power, but some cream to it
  • Finish: Looooonnnnnnngggggg
  • Big difference with water, just so much smoother
  • Strong, yet somehow smooth, not peat really, just smoke
  • Much better with water
  • H20 helps with the medicinal, really makes an impact
  • Excellent with Water
  • Drinkability: 7,6,7,6.9,7.0,7 (with water: ) 8,6.5, 8,7.2,7.5,7.5

Round 2: Craigellachie 13 Year Old

Cost: $80 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • This one’s a repeat for the Club, mainly because the dude that updates the web site is completely incompetent.

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Copper Mahogany to Honey
  • Nose: Fruity for 6 of us, Spice, Floral, Citrus, hint of Smoke
  • Palate: Fruity for 4 of us, Oil, Lightness, Sweet, Chocolate, Smooth, Creamy
  • Finish: Sharp Drop
  • Ok without water, but better with – longer finish found
  • No real finish to it, but quite sweet, a movie night scotch
  • Longer finish with water oddly, otherwise no finish at all.
  • Finish falls off a cliff. A good sipping whiskey but unremarkable
  • Finish is non-existent, would go well with sprite (yes, sprite)
  • Drinkability: 6,5.1,4.0,5.5,5.5,6.3 (with water:) 6.5,6.3, 3.8,6.0,5.0,6.3

Bonus Round: Cardhu 12 Year Old

Cost: $70 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • Cardhu has in the past been variously known as Cardow and Cardoor from the gaelic ‘black rock’. The spellings all refer to the same hamlet, in the heart of Speyside, on the stretch of the river known as Knockando.

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Just look at the bloody image, man.
  • Nose: Fruity for all, Chocolate, Spice
  • Palate: Fruity, Citrus, Floral, Light, some Oil
  • Finish: Sharp Drop, no finish
  • Not much there, very thin
  • A beginner Scotch, ouch
  • Add honey to it, and take for the sniffles, boring
  • A cooking whisky, that water cannot help
  • Use for making toddies when you have a cold
  • A good scotch to re-gift
  • Drinkability: 4, 3, 5.5, 3.0, 3.0, 3.0 (with water:) 3, 3, 6.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.0
