Tasting Reviews

2020-05b – Malcolm A.

Continuing to recognize that COVID-19 is a fact of life, this gathering was held outdoors, each member brought their own glasses, snacks were individualized, and there was no bro hugs, shaking hands, high fives, low fives or any fives. This tasting was blind, and the reveal done only AFTER the Drinkability Scores had been collected and recorded.

Round 1: Old Pulteney 15 Year Old

Cost: $146 CDNRegion: Highland

Fun Facts:

  • Not only is the Pulteney distillery on the coast, its site is so exposed as to be falling off the furthest end of Scotland. It is the northernmost distillery on the mainland, at Wick.

NSC Comments:

  • Maturation: First & Second fill Bourbon barrels and finished in Oloroso Sherry butts.
  • Colour: Light straw / oak
  • Nose: Easy on the nose, coffee, toffy and bananas? WTF
  • Palate: Creamy! Mungo Like!
  • Finish: Smooth on the 2nd pass
  • Drinkability: 9,9,8,8,8,7.5 (Russian Judge),9,9

Round 2: Tamdhu Batch Strength (Batch 4)

Cost: $82 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • “Tamdhu” means “The little dark hill” in Gaelic

NSC Comments:

  • Maturation: European and American Oak, Oloroso
  • Colour: Bourbonish
  • Nose: No Nose (potential COVID nose?), H20 improved the aroma
  • Palate: A bit creamy, lots of alchol
  • Finish: Long, with a little sweetness. Nice finish, dark chocolate, honey, big surprise
  • Drinkability: 9,7,7,8.5,9,9,7,6

Bonus Round: Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon

Cost: $46 CDNRegion: Kentucky

Fun Facts:

NSC Comments:

  • Colour: Looks suspiciously just like bourbon
  • Nose: “Mashy” on the nose (Randy’s turn of phrase)
  • Palate:
  • Finish: Long and mature
  • If you add some 7up, it’s a winner!
  • Drinkability: 2,3,4,4,6

Bonus Round: Scapa The Orcadian

Fun Facts:

  • Bea D. tendered her resignation in the Nanoose Scotch Club, and gave us this bottle as a parting gift. We will miss her attendance at our get togethers greatly, fully expect her to attend future events as our guest, require Robert her son’s attendance whenever he is in town at a meeting time, and in fact, are not really accepting her resignation. But we are drinking the Scapa – we’re crazy, but not insane.

NSC Comments:

  • We love Bea…
