Tasting Reviews

2020-02 – Stan W.

Round 1: Tomintoul 16 Year Old

Cost: $135 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • The Cockbridge to Tomintoul road is notorious for the ease with which it becomes snowbound in winter and it would probably be more useful if the winter road reports enumerated the days when it was not blocked with snow.

NSC Comments:

  • Beautiful color
  • Soft nose, and hint of sweetness on the nose
  • Taste of orange, Coffee
  • Slow steady fade off the tongue
  • Nobody hit it with water
  • A good sipper
  • Very smooth
  • However, for the price, did not have anyone willing to pay that much for it.

Round 2: Glencadam 10 Year Old

Cost: $95 CDNRegion: Highland

Fun Facts:

  • This well-tended distillery is in a pretty location just outside the ancient city of Brechin, on the East coast. The distillery was founded in 1825 and extensively modernised in 1959. It has been associated with Ballantine and Stewart’s Cream of the Barley blend.

NSC Comments:

  • Butterscotch nose
  • Strong alcohol on the taste but really good
  • I like it
  • Very pleasant
  • May be one of the best scotches we have had (one noser’s opinion at least)
  • Toffee taste once hit with water
  • Good value all agreed

Bonus Round: Shelter Point Artisanal

Cost: $70 CDNRegion: Vancouver Island, Canada

Fun Facts:

  • We can drive there in about an hour, how fun is that!

NSC Comments:

  • Smells of coconut
  • Water makes it
  • Needed water
  • Fair value
  • Pleasant
  • A bit young, but buyable

  1. Greetings everyone from Toronto.
I’m new to the Nosers email list (many thanks to Trevor) but am already greatly enjoying the posts. So far the whiskies on the website are all ones I have tried and enjoyed, and I am pleased to see Shelter Point get a mention. You are all fortunate to have SP a mere hour away! The distillery is one of my stops whenever I am on Vancouver Island, and I brought a bottle of their Double Barreled home with me at the end of January. To me, it’s a nicer drink than the Artisanal. I haven’t tried the Montfort and none was available when I was there.

    best regards,

    Peter B.
