Tasting Reviews

Round 1: Loch Lomond Open Special

Cost: $63 CDNRegion: Highland

Fun Facts:

  • The Official Whisky of the Open, Lock Lomond created this in collaboration with 2011 Open Champion Darren Clarke.

NSC Comments:

  • Orange on the nose
  • Water makes a difference
  • Long finish
  • Very nice
  • Smooth
  • Smuggling for the group (whatever that means)

Round 2: Glenfiddich Experimental Series IPA Cask Finish

Cost: $100 CDNRegion: Speyside

Fun Facts:

  • The glen of the river Fiddich gives its name to the biggest-selling single malt whisky in the world. The Glenfiddich distillery is on the small river whose name it bears, in Dufftown.
  • A whisky finished in casks seasoned with India Pale Ale

NSC Comments:

  • Honey taste once water was added
  • But no one could describe what they smelled or tasted
  • Not a winner.  But not the worst loser ever.

Bonus Round: Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old

Cost: $100 CDNRegion: Highland

Fun Facts:

  • Might be the highest elevation distillery in Scotland
  • 95 Points by Jim Murray Whisky Bible

NSC Comments:

  • Everybody loves it. Very smooth.
  • Great color. A perfect finish
  • Bit of Carmel

Bonus Round: Octomore Masterclass 08.1 8 Year Old

Cost: $268 CDNRegion: Islay

Fun Facts:

  • 168 ppm phenol – Holy Lord Jesus.

NSC Comments:

  • Smuggled in from the Rome airport by Chris’s son for the other son, turns out, he doesn’t like peat. The bottle is ours by default!
  • Stupid crazy amount of peat and 59 proof
  • So powerful, so strong on the nose
  • Once you have it in your mouth it will spread like honey on the tongue
  • THE most distinctive scotch the club has had
  • Water allows you to pick out more of the complexities
  • Wow
  • Unbelievable

This session went deep into the night, and at the end, the Octomore was “no more” (see what I did there).
