Next door to Longmorn, and under the same ownership. Both distilleries were built in the 1890s but Benriach closed down in 1900 and remained silent till it was reopened and rebuilt in 1965.
In 1975 output was increased from 660,000 gallons/annum to 750,000 gallons/annum.
NSC Comments:
Everyone loved it
Trevor thinks it may be the best so far brought to the club. Quoted as “wow”
Huge sherry nose, smooth, citrusy
Round 2: Laphroaig Triple Wood
Cost: $79 CDN
Region: Islay
Fun Facts:
An incredible new release from Laphroaig.
This was originally launched for the duty free market, and it is a tour de force from the Islay distillery. First off, they mature this in bourbon barrels, before transfer into quarter casks, and a third maturation in Oloroso sherry European oak butts.
Astonishing with oodles of peat smoke and sweetness.
NSC Comments:
Medicinal gauss in a really, really, really good way.
Smells of the sea, strong peat.
Where’s the wood? Sherry is non-detectable
Bourbon is obvious
Bonus Round: Crown Royal Rye
Cost: $40 CND
Region: Canada
Fun Facts:
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is made with 90% rye. This is gently spicy with soft pepper, vanilla and butterscotch notes.
NSC Comments:
Turned into a political discussion about the red leather couch about to cross Canada, then rump, I mean Trump. Chris offered to rent out his red chair for half the price.
Not well thought off (the Rye, I mean, although that’s likely the prevailing thought regarding rump, I mean Trump).
Just how much circus peanuts (personally, I was sure Keith said penis) do you need?
Group cannot understand how this won 2016 World Whisky of the year from Jim Murray.
